Its plumage is mostly grey above and somewhat white below. Adults have a white head with a black robe and a thin crest. In young specimens the whole head is greyish. It has a strong pink and yellowish bill. It has a leisurely flight, with its long retracted neck (S-shaped) and arched wings. When you extend your neck, the beak looks like a spoon. This is characteristic of herons and egrets and distinguishes them from storks.
It occupies different wet areas, both natural and artificial. During the breeding period it prefers lagoons or freshwater banks with abundant vegetation.
